It’s Friday, But SATURDAY’S Coming!

Yes, I meant to say Saturday.

I know the original and famous sermon by SM Lockridge skips right over to Sunday.

It skips from the trauma and brutality of the cross straight to the victory of the resurrected Jesus. But today, I have found myself wondering about the eerily silent Saturday.

Scriptures like Psalm 22 and Isaiah 53 clearly predicted and prophesied about the sufferings of the Messiah. And Jesus Himself talked of His glorious resurrection, even though the disciples couldn’t comprehend what He was describing.

But what about the day in the middle. Some of Jesus’ followers had fled out of fear. Some of them were hanging out together, mourning and weeping (Mark 16:10). Assuredly they were all wondering what the future held.

The disciples saw Jesus beaten, they watched His cruel death, they removed His body and laid it in the tomb – these were their very real experiences. Now the Saturday questions set in…Was Jesus who He said He was or had they all been deceived? Could the religious Pharisees have been correct in their claims that Jesus was not the Messiah?  This Saturday was completely silent as Jesus laid in a sealed up tomb.

The “Silent Saturday” is common to the human experience.

After life-battering trauma, there is most certainly a “Saturday” of questioning, depression, or wondering what-in-the-world just happened moments. God’s presence seems sealed up as tight as Jesus in the tomb.

Everything we believed to be true and sure has been turned upside down for a season. We wait for what seems like an eternity for answers or something to make sense. But instead – there is a long silent Saturday.

But God won’t leave us in silence friends!

Just as Sunday came and the news of Jesus’ resurrection rang through the streets of Jerusalem, God will resurrect your spirit. That life-battering trauma that slung you to the ground will not keep you down. Your Sunday is coming, Child of God!

But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you. Romans 8:11

So what do you do during the icky Saturday when you can’t hear or see Jesus? Keep believing. Keep praying. Keep knowing that He will never leave you nor forsake you. God didn’t leave Jesus in the grave and He will not leave you in your Silent Saturday experience either.

Your Sunday is coming child of God – Your Sunday is coming!

  1. This is beautiful! One of my favorite Max Lucado quotes is “We never expect to find Jesus in the storm, but it is in the storms that He has our keenest attention.” I bet that Saturday felt like the worse storm ever. Thank you for sharing your heart.
