Jesus said something in John 14:12 that may totally blow your skirt up if you haven’t really thought about it. He told his disciples that they would do GREATER WORKS than the ones they had seen Him do.
“Truly, truly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do, he will do also; and greater works than these he will do; because I go to the Father.” John14:12
How could the disciples, (and by extension us) do GREATER things than Jesus? The answer is two-fold.
- They BELIEVED
- Because Jesus went to the Father
Why are these two things of ultimate importance?
Because in God’s economy faith is everything! Believe and faith come from the same Greek root word, pistis. We can do nothing – certainly not GREATER things – apart from belief. Read Romans 4 and look at how many times it says Abraham’s FAITH was credited to him as righteousness.
What does the fact that Jesus told His followers that He is going to be with his Father have to do with GREATER things? Jesus is prepping His followers for His impending death, burial, resurrection, and ascension. He knew they would feel abandoned like orphans. Jesus begins to tell them of a Helper whom He will send – the Holy Spirit. The sheer fact that the Holy Spirit indwells ALL believers should help us understand that our works, by sheer multiplication of His power in us, SHOULD be GREATER!
But here’s the thing – we are not GREATER. It is so sad to know that we have access to GREATER but no real desire of it. During the month of October, join me as I blog through the book, GREATER by Steven Furtick. It has me UNDONE in this season of my life. Join me on my 31-Day journey to GREATER!
